7 Uses For Stale Leftover Cake

Wondering what to do with that old leftover cake that you and your family didn’t finish and its too stale to taste good? Or do you have extra cake crust you had to cut from around your cake that you don’t know what to do with? Well I’ve got about 7 quick and easy uses for extra cake!

1. Cake Truffles

Turn something stale into something moist and delicious with a truffle. Take your pieces of cake and if it’s already covered in frosting that’s even better! Make sure the ratio of cake to frosting is 3 to 1. Use a fork to blend the cake and frosting together to a consistency perfect to form balls. Then get your desired chocolate flavor of candy melts and roll the ball into the melted chocolate and let dry on parchment paper. Keep plain, top with some of the cake crumbles if you have any left, or some sprinkles if you want to get fancy!

2. Pie Crust

Most use cookies such as Oreos or graham crackers for certain pie crusts, but this can be substituted with cake! Use 1 ½ cups of cake crumbs with ½ cup of cubed butter and knead them together. From there you can mold that into the pie pan. Add your desired filling and bake if needed!

3. Ice Cream Topping

Almost everything is put on ice cream these days so why not cake bits! Crumble the old cake and sprinkle on top, or for a crunchy ice cream topping, toast the crumbled cake pieces at 350 degrees F for about 5-10min.

4. Trifle Dessert

Make a trifle with layers of cake crumble throughout. For example if you were making a chocolate trifle, you can layer chocolate mousse, then cool whip cream, chocolate cake crumbs and chocolate chips, then repeat the layers and maybe top with some more cake crumbles and oreos!

5. Cake Shakes

This has to be my favorite use for old cake, as long as it’s still relatively soft. If it is too hard I would choose to use the cake in a different way such as the pie crust, ice cream topping for cake topping. But if it is, then you can blend it straight into a vanilla, chocolate or whatever shake you are making OR if you want chunks of cake you break up the cake and stir into your milkshake by hand.

6. Cake Pops

Very similar to the truffles, create a cute cake pop instead! Cake that may be too old and dry to eat can still be saved when made into cake pops! When you mix the old cake with frosting of that flavor, it revives the cake with moisture and makes a rich cake pop. Poke a cake pop stick in it and dip in chocolate and these will last another week and a half!

7. Crumble as Garnish on Cake

The perfect addition to put on top of cake! This is something I do with my red velvet cupcakes and it adds to make a pretty garnish. Do this by breaking up the extra cake or cake crust and put right on top or toast the pieces to make a crunchy garnish on top.
